Anche quel pomeriggio il sole inondava di calore la piccola spiaggetta. Si era riformata dopo alcuni anni e alimentava una nuova speranza per l'inverno. Tuttavia, esso era ancora lontano e l'estate governava ancora sovrana il tempo. Il torrente si snodava tra il calore del pomeriggio, come un lungo serpente steso al sole. Mentre risalivo con calma verso monte, i ricordi delle avventure passate, dei tentativi riusciti e di quelli non, ritornavano in vita tra i massi e le acque che nonostante la stagione continuavano a scorrere a valle. Di acqua, lì, ce n'era stata sempre, e questo era uno dei motivi della presenza costante del merlo acquaiolo (Cinclus cinclus). Avevo ormai superato la spiaggetta dove molte volte avevo vissuto avventure straordinarie con i merli, albe ghiacciate indimenticabili, colori roventi. Passavano i minuti, il pomeriggio iniziava a sfumare. L'ombra regalava refrigerio, quello che mancava durante tutta la calda giornata estiva. Guardavo con disappunto e nostalgia uno dei luoghi che durante la stessa stagione mi aveva ospitato negli anni passati: tutti tentativi falliti di ritrarre il merlo in modo ambientato. Avevamo provato con diverse strategie, ma il merlo acquaiolo non ci aveva mai donato un istante. Così, infatti, da tre anni ormai si cercava di ritrarlo mostrando il meraviglioso ambiente in cui vive. Poco più avanti, passato un piccolo ponte, il primo e ormai antico tentativo prendeva ancora una volta le sue sembianze. Era un tratto di torrente molto bello quello, i grandi alberi donavano generosamente la loro ombra alle piccole e numerose cascatelle che lo componevano. Da lì però si aprivano le porte al vero mondo dei merli acquaioli, sancito da una sorta di portale: una larga curva con pesanti massi e profonde cavità nell'argine sassoso. E quello che c'era dopo, sì, era veramente il suo mondo, protetto da cespugli voluminosi di Albero delle Farfalle (Buddleja davidii). Lì il tempo si era fermato, i colori del pomeriggio inondavano gli alberi sullo sfondo, mentre in primo piano veleggiava ancora la memoria del capanno fatto proprio durante l'estate scorsa. Non importava cosa avevo o non avevo portato a casa, ciò che contava erano le emozioni. Essere là, da soli, un intero pomeriggio, ascoltando il lento e perentorio scroscio dell'acqua e i suoni dei colori che piano piano svanivano per far posto all'arrivo della sera, era già un dono straordinario. Sì certo, mancava solo una cosa, la si vedeva di volta in volta volare arditamente tra i sassi del torrente. Talvolta ti veniva anche in contro, schivandoti all'ultimo e proseguendo alle tue spalle. E nascosta tra un cespuglio e l'altro, protetta dal silenzio e dalla magia, c'era infine la Cascata del Merlo Acquaiolo: era lì che si compiva il presente quest'estate. Lì si trovava la verità, una strategia diversa aveva questo compito, quello di svelarla. Un posto magico, e forse doveva proprio essere quel luogo a incorniciare il merlo acquaiolo, nessun altro posto ne era più degno. Forse avevamo dovuto aspettare tre anni proprio per questo, per capire che lì e non da nessun'altra parte c'era tutto, anche lui. E quel pomeriggio sì, la verità c'era, nascosta lì tra gli Alberi delle Farfalle, tra le rocce e l'acqua che continuava a scorrere da sempre. Così anche noi lì avevamo un posto ed era nostro compito rispettarlo e proteggerlo, non andando oltre. Lì, in uno dei tanti punti di quel torrente, un serpente steso al sole rovente di fine estate, un cerchio perfetto. – Con questa foto si chiude un'avventura meravigliosa e straordinaria, una sfida, quella di ritrarre il merlo in maniera ambientata senza l'aiuto di un punto di riferimento nelle circostanze quale un nido.
