Nella capitale dell'Impero di Quechua regnava un Inca figlio del Sole, la cui rettitudine, generosità e coraggio, gli avevano assicurato l'amore e il rispetto della sua gente. Il suo popolo lo amava incondizionatamente, al punto di dimenticare persino le sue origini divine. Un brutto giorno questo nobile Cacique si ammalò di una grave quanto misteriosa malattia. A nulla valsero le preghiere della sua gente. Gli stregoni chiamati al suo capezzale improvvisarono danze, fecero ogni sorta di esorcismi, provarono tutti i rimedi conosciuti, ma nulla poterono contro il male che inevitabilmente stava conducendo il nobile Cacique verso la fine dei suoi giorni. Il suo popolo era disperato, ormai avevano perso ogni speranza di poter vedere il viso del loro amato capo ritrovare lo splendore del Sole, quando capitò da quelle parti un viandante. Fu trattato subito come ospite di riguardo e giunto il momento di riprendere il suo viaggio, chiese il perchè della tristezza che leggeva nei loro occhi. Saputo il motivo, assicurò che da qualche parte dell'Impero esisteva un rimedio per la malattia dell'Inca. Si trattava di una sorgente dalle acque miracolose, ma per trovarla era necessario attraversare tutta la Cordigliera. Non c'era tempo per inviare qualcuno a prelevare l'acqua dalla sorgente miracolosa. Allora alcuni tra i più valorosi guerrieri dell'Impero, organizzarono una spedizione attraverso le montagne. A turno portavano in spalla il Cacique, quasi senza concedersi sosta, la vita del loro amato Signore era in pericolo e non c'era tempo da perdere. Quechua la città Imperiale era ormai lontana, quando videro un fiume che correva impetuoso sotto le cime della montagna. Decisero di seguirlo finchè correva nella loro stessa direzione, ma arrivati ad un certo punto, il fiume deviava il suo percorso e si dirigeva verso Est sbarrando loro la strada. Cercarono un passo che permettesse loro di poterlo attraversare, ma invano. Guadare il fiume era impossibile a causa della violenza della corrente che li avrebbero inevitabilmente trascinati via. Il povero Cacique era sempre più debole, ormai non aveva più neanche la forza per aprire gli occhi. I suoi guerrieri con profonda tristezza compresero che ormai nulla potevano per salvare il loro Signore, che l'indomani non avrebbe aperto più gli occhi al Sole. Decisero di accamparsi sul posto e aspettare l'alba. Inti, il Sole, che dal giorno della loro partenza, non aveva mai smesso di seguirli durante il loro viaggio, commosso dall'amore, dall'abnegazione e da quella prova di lealtà dimostrata da quei valenti guerrieri nei confronti di quel suo figlio prediletto decise di aiutarli. All'alba si verificò un prodigio, alcuni dei soldati furono pietrificati trasformandosi in un grandissimo ponte sul fiume.
