In Terra di Bari tra l'Ofanto e Monopoli, su uno sviluppo costiero di 150 km, intervallate da città munite di castelli e porti fortificati, furono edificate tra il 1569 e il 1573 sedici torri. Torre Calderina faceva parte di questo complesso sistema di torri di avvistamento del Regno di Napoli, eredità di un piano di fortificazione voluto da Carlo V nel XVI secolo per difendere le coste del Mezzogiorno dalle sanguinarie invasioni dei predoni turchi che arrivavano dal mare. Infatti, dal mare, giungeva il pericolo da scongiurare al grido di “mamma… li turchi”.
