In un epoca compresa tra i 10'000 ed i 20'000 anni fa, nei meandri della Via Lattea e della costellazione del Cigno, a circa 2'400 anni luce di distanza dall'osservatore terrestre, una gigantesca supernova, pari a circa 20 volte il nostro Sole, esplose. La Nebulosa Velo, è quello che rimane di questo evento catastrofico che ha solcato grande parte del nostro cielo per una distanza di 110 anni luce da parte a parte. Ciuffi di gas colorati simili a fumo sono tutto ciò che rimane visibile di ciò che era una volta la luminosa stella. Un attimo prima dell'esplosione, un forte vento stellare soffiava nella cavità della bolla di gas creando questi flussi intrecciati a seguito dell'onda d'urto derivante dall'energia dell'antica esplosione. Quest'onda ha rilasciato materiale a milioni di gradi e man mano che si raffreddava nel vuoto cosmico, produceva i brillanti colori che si possono vedere oggi nell'immagine. La conseguenza di questa esplosione è tutt'oggi presente, in quanto l'onda d'urto si sta propagando muovendosi a circa 2,3 milioni di chilometri all'ora, a questa velocità, per coprire la distanza Terra - Luna ci si impiegherebbe 15 minuti. La nebulosa è però così lontana da noi, che prima che qualche gas possa anche solo avvicinarsi alla Terra dovrà passare veramente moltissimo tempo. La foto è la somma di 42 ore di pose in una zona di cielo decisamente densa di polveri e stelle.
