Su un'altura a circa mille metri di quota, nella cornice del maestoso Monte Velino, si ergono le rovine di Alba Fucens, la città più antica d'Abruzzo, di cui rimangono le stupende vestigia di una storia millenaria. L'antica colonia latina, nell'attuale frazione di Massa d'Albe (AQ), fu fondata dai Romani nel 303 a.C., nel territorio degli Equi, a nord del lago Fucino, in un contesto ambientale e paesaggistico di grande fascino. Il nome latino deriva dalla posizione del suo abitato dal quale si poteva ammirare il sorgere del sole (l'alba) sul Lago del Fucino prima del suo prosciugamento avvenuto nel 1876. Abitata all'inizio da circa seimila persone, vide accrescere la sua importanza nel corso del tempo, tanto da diventare una delle colonie più prosperose dell'Impero, sempre fedele alla capitale e pronta a difenderla ed aiutarla inviando truppe numerose in caso di scontri. Alba Fucens era circondata da quasi tre chilometri di mura difensive e da quattro porte di accesso. Dopo avere partecipato alla Seconda guerra punica, inviando soldati contro Annibale, conobbe un lungo periodo di prosperità e ricchezza. La colonia, infatti, fu abbellita con numerosi edifici, tuttora in parte visibili: il foro, l'anfiteatro, la basilica, il macellum, le terme, l'acquedotto, dei templi e il santuario di Ercole, una vasta area circondata da un portico, utilizzata probabilmente anche come mercato degli ovini. La grandiosa statua di Ercole posta al suo interno e attribuita ad artisti greci, è conservata nel Museo Archeologico di Chieti. La struttura urbanistica riflette l'impianto romano dei cardi e dei decumani. Lungo la Via del Miliario sono visibili i resti di una antica domus romana e una pietra miliare, di particolare pregio, raffigurante un combattimento tra gladiatori su cui è incisa la distanza da Roma: 68 miglia. Con la decadenza dell'Impero romano anche Alba Fucens cominciò a perdere di importanza fino all'occupazione dei Bizantini nel 537, durante la guerra gotica.
