Il piacere della bicicletta di Alfredo Oriani "Il piacere della bicicletta è quello stesso della libertà, forse meglio di una liberazione andarsene ovunque, ad ogni momento, arrestandosi alla prima velleità di un capriccio, senza preoccupazioni come per un cavallo, senza servitù come in treno. La bicicletta siamo ancora noi , che vinciamo lo spazio e il tempo; stiamo in bilico e quindi nella indecisione di un giuoco colla tranquilla sicurezza di vincere; siamo soli senza nemmeno il contatto colla terra, che le nostre ruote sfiorano appena, quasi in balia del vento, contro il quale lottiamo come un uccello. Non è il viaggio o la sua economia nel compierlo che ci soddisfa, ma la facoltà appunto di interromperlo e di mutarlo, quella poesia istintiva di una improvvisazione spensierata, mentre una forza orgogliosa ci gonfia il cuore di sentirci così liberi. Domani la carrozzella automobile ci permetterà viaggi più rapidi e più lunghi, ma non saremo più né così liberi né così soli: la carrozzella non potrà identificarsi con noi come la bicicletta, non saranno le nostre gambe che muovono gli stantuffi, non sarà il nostro soffio che la spinge nelle salite. Seduti come in un treno non ci tornerà più l'illusione di essere giovani, correndo coll'impeto stesso della giovinezza; non avremo trionfato del vento, non ci saremo ritemprati nella fatica al sol; ma la nuova macchina c'imporrà le preoccupazioni dei propri guasti non riparabili al momento, c'impedirà di sognare, perché non potremo più guidarla istintivamente, e ci darà il senso doloroso del limite, appunto perché separata da noi, sospinta da una forza che non può fondersi colla nostra"..
