Costituisce l'opera di ulteriore fortificazione dell'isola, voluta da Carlo D'Angiò sotto l'ordine dei Cistercensi per respingere gli attacchi esterni. La fortezza è circondata dalle alte muraglie di cinta. Da segnalare un lungo cunicolo di cui non si conosce esattamente lo sbocco, probabilmente un'altra via di fuga per i frati in caso di attacco o deposito segreto di monili e oggetti di valore . Bella da vedere anche la cisterna cd. Meridiana, forse utilizzata per puntare l'orario e profonda circa 17 mt.
