La Lepre variabile (Lepus timidus) deve il suo nome al fatto che il manto muta in base alla stagione, da bianco candido durante l'inverno a bruno-grigiastro in estate. Il nome latino, invece, denota l'indole estremamente schiva. In Italia è presente solo sull'arco alpino, dov'è perfettamente adattata a vivere a quote elevate, facendo di questa specie, assieme alla Pernice bianca e all'Ermellino, un vero e proprio relitto glaciale.Per anni ho atteso e sperato in un incontro anche fortuito con questo magnifico animale e finalmente dopo tanta ricerca... il magico momento - Lombardia, agosto 2023
