Non era possibile scavare delle trincee nel granito, perciò ai soldati italiani fu dato ordine di erigere degli spessi muri a secco, fortificazioni che dovevano servire a difendere il valico di passo Ignaga (2570 m). Dall'altro lato della Valle di Fumo un tempo terra del Tirolo asburgico, l'esercito austroungarico aveva invece fortificato tutta l'alta cresta che sale aguzza e verticale fino su ai ghiacci dell'Adamello. La valle intera rimase per lungo tempo contesa, una specie di terra di nessuno; ma i valligiani "sfollati" e costretti ad abbandonare il loro paese e gli alpeggi millenari conservarono di certo la memoria, secondo la quale l'antica via attraverso il passo Ignaga veniva salita e ridiscesa innumerevoli volte da uomini, bestie e materiali in transito oltre confine verso e dalla Val Camonica (Lombardia). Mi piace pensare che sia di qua e che di là dal passo molti abitanti fra queste genti di montagna povere e laboriose, da sempre vissute alla periferia degli imperi, compresero ben presto che la loro terra, stritolata dagli eventi, veniva coinvolta ed era teatro di una guerra folle e di una "inutile strage" (cit.). Eccole dunque (solo?) un secolo dopo, le rovine di quelle mura e di quei freddi e sterili ripari.
