L'addome, chiamato più propriamente gastro, delle Camponotus lateralis (sottofamiglia Formicinae) è elastico ed ha uno spazio apposito, detto "stomaco sociale" o ingluvie, che ha la funzione di deposito temporaneo di cibo. Quando è pieno i segmenti addominali sono separati e le membrane intersegmentali sono tese. Le operaie che fungono da serbatoi viventi, dette replete, rigurgitano cibo su richiesta ai loro compagni di nido (trofallassi). Alcune caste di formiche infatti non possono nutrirsi autonomamente perché sono dotate di mandibole troppo specializzate o perché sono addette alla cura della prole.
