La Dysgonia algira è un lepidottero della famiglia Erebidae. Il suo ciclo vitale inizia in primavera quando le falene, dopo aver trascorso tutto l'inverno nella crisalide, sfarfallano e si accoppiano. Qualche giorno dopo, le femmine depongono le uova a piccoli gruppi sulle foglie delle piante nutrici: melograno, more e rovo. Le uova appena deposte sono verdi ma durante lo sviluppo compaiono macchie marroni, si schiudono in circa 10 giorni e i piccoli bruchi iniziano subito a nutrirsi. Hanno abitudini crepuscolari e notturne, di giorno rimangono fermi sui rami mimetizzandosi grazie alla loro colorazione marrone; durante le mie esplorazioni ne osservo molti mentre mangiano con voracità le foglie dei melograni. Si muovono con un'andatura simile a quella dei Geometridae e se disturbati iniziano ad agitarsi facendo piccoli salti. Dopo circa 4 settimane diventano adulti, scavano un cunicolo nel terreno tra le radici delle piante e ad alcuni centimetri di profondità costruiscono una celletta rivestita di seta, dove avviene la metamorfosi. La crisalide è piuttosto grande di colore marrone scuro e sfarfallano dopo due o tre settimane. A luglio avviene la seconda generazione, i bruchi diventano adulti in autunno e restano tutto l'inverno nella crisalide, pronti ad iniziare un nuovo ciclo l'anno successivo. La testa e il corpo delle falene sono marroni, la spirotromba è ben sviluppata per consentire la raccolta del nettare. Sulle ali ci sono delle particolari macchie marroni e lungo l'estremità c'è una sottile striscia con tonalità gialle o bianche. Le femmine sono più grandi dei maschi, la colorazione è più chiara ma le macchie sulle ali sono più scure. Qualche giorno fa durante una mia esplorazione notturna, sono riuscito ad osservare l'accoppiamento di questa specie tra i rami di un ulivo. Sono riuscito a scattare molte foto per circa un'ora fino a quando, concluso l'accoppiamento, la femmina è volata via; erano quasi le 5 e il cielo si stava schiarendo. Da una settimana sto utilizzando l'Irix 150mm, un obiettivo molto interessante che mi ha stupito per le sue caratteristiche. La qualità delle foto è costante anche a diaframmi più chiusi e la messa a fuoco molto precisa permette ingrandimenti di oltre 1:1 senza slitta micrometrica.
