Fotografia della sommità della Sacrestia Capitolare e dell'abside presa da sud-est. Rispetto alla foto precedente mi sono avvicinato al Duomo di qualche decina di metri. L'abside costituisce la parte più antica della cattedrale ed è stata edificata a partire dal 1387. «Lungh 'me la Fabrica del Domm»; è la tipica espressione meneghina per commentare un lavoro che non finisce mai. La Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano è tanto antica quanto la costruzione stessa del Duomo. Infatti venne fondata nel 1387 per volontà di Gian Galeazzo Visconti, signore di Milano, che il medesimo anno assegnò alla Fabbrica le cave di marmo di Candoglia, la principale materia con cui è costruita la cattedrale. La Veneranda Fabbrica si occupò dell'edificazione del Duomo, durata circa mezzo millennio; e attualmente cura la sua manutenzione, che deve essere continua e meticolosa. In effetti non ricordo di aver mai visto il Duomo del tutto libero da impalcature. Qui sono visibili sulla copertura del deambulatorio e attorno al tiburio; sopra al quale è la Guglia Maggiore, costruita tra il 1765 e il 1769 su progetto dell'architetto Francesco Croce; e penso che sia superfluo specificare cosa rappresenta la statua dorata in cima ad essa e che qui vediamo di spalle. Dirò solo che è alta quattro metri e che fu realizzata su disegno dello scultore Giuseppe Perego, tra il 1769 e il 1773, in lastre di rame placcate d'oro su un'armatura metallica. Alla sinistra della Guglia Maggiore, sull'angolo della Sacrestia Capitolare, vediamo una guglia sormontata da una statua raffigurante un guerriero con un'insegna viscontea. Le parti in marmo di Candoglia, che notiamo più chiare, hanno di recente sostituito le equivalenti, tanto ammalorate per via del tempo e degli agenti atmosferici da non poter essere restaurate, e che quindi sono state rimosse.
