Si tratta di una ben nota pianta alloctona invasiva. Introdotta in Europa per scopi ornamentali, si è rapidamente diffusa ed è ormai facilmente rinvenibile ai bordi di molti specchi d'acqua della Pianura Padana. Purtroppo causa grosso danno alla biodiversità della flora e della fauna degli ambienti umidi.
