Era una una tranquilla notte di fine giugno e come sempre ero alla ricerca delle meraviglie della natura, osservavo attentamente ogni ramo e stelo d'erba cercando di fare meno rumore possibile. Tra i rami giovani di un pruno, ho trovato questo particolare bruco. Il Lymantria dispar è un lepidottero che si nutre di molte varietà di piante. Il ciclo vitale di questa specie inizia in autunno quando la femmina depone sulle piante nutrici centinaia di uova, di colore giallo, in gruppi chiamati ovature. le ovature sono rivestite da peli gialli che vengono emessi dall'addome delle femmine. Durante tutto l'inverno le uova sono protette dal freddo grazie a questo rivestimento e in primavera avviene la schiusa. I piccoli bruchi, di colore nero, iniziano subito a mangiare le foglie della pianta su cui si trovano. All'inizio mangiano soprattutto di giorno ma durante la crescita sviluppano abitudini notturne. Hanno dei lunghi peli che gli consentono di lasciarsi trasportare dal vento pianta per pianta anche per diversi chilometri. La diffusione dei bruchi è dovuta più al vento che allo spostamento delle farfalle femmine, che non sono adatte ai lunghi voli. Diventano adulti in circa due mesi, durante i quali grazie alle mute cambiano colore. I bruchi adulti possono raggiungere gli 8cm, sono marrone chiaro e sul dorso hanno delle protuberanze, blu verso la testa e rosse sull'addome. Costruiscono la crisalide, di colore marrone, attaccata con dei filamenti di seta ai rami o alle foglie delle piante nutrici. Questa specie compie una sola generazione all'anno e gli sfarfallamenti avvengono tra giugno e luglio. Il dimorfismo sessuale delle farfalle è molto evidente. I maschi hanno un'apertura alare di circa 40 mm e sono sempre in volo alla ricerca delle femmine. Sono di colore marrone con tonalità di giallo, sulle ali ci sono delle striature più scure. Le femmine sono più grosse dei maschi, l'addome grande e arrotondato rende il volo molto faticoso. Restano spesso ferme sulle piante e si spostano solo per accoppiarsi e deporre le uova. Le ali sono bianche con striature marroni e l'apertura alare è di circa 60 mm.
