Posto nel cuore del Sannio in provincia di Isernia nel Molise. Adagiato su un colle a 1027 m. d'altezza, Pietrabbondante rappresenta un vero e proprio gioiello architettonico e archeologico tutto da scoprire. Le origini di Pietrabbondante sono antiche, testimoniate dai resti di strutture fortificate sannitiche poste sul monte Saraceno. Nei pressi del borgo sono visibili ancora alcuni resti dell'antico insediamento urbano che è costituito da un santuario che fungeva da importante centro strategico e politico dei Sanniti tra il II secolo a.C. e il 95 a.C. L'interesse maggiore è concentrato sul vicino sito archeologico di Bovianum Vetus, un vero gioiello architettonico di epoca ellenistica-italica, posto nei pressi della frazione Calcatello. Vi si trovano due Templi "A" e " B " e un teatro, con sedili in pietra dalla caratteristica forma anatomica, utilizzato come luogo di riunione. Nel Corso del tempo è diventato anche un rilevante centro culturale , ospitando nel periodo estivo importanti manifestazioni teatrali classiche. P.S. Purtroppo ..e la ritengo una pecca , l' apertura di questo sito per le visite avviene solo alcuni giorni della settimana e solo nelle fasce orarie del mattino.
