Sh2-109, un vasto e complesso sistema di regioni HII, nebulose oscure, colonne luminose di gas e associazioni di stelle giovani parte del complesso nebuloso molecolare del Cigno. È una nube molecolare gigante posta a circa 5000 AL dal sistema solare e visibile alcuni gradi a sud di Sadr, poco a nord dell'ammasso aperto NGC 6871, con un'estensione apparente di circa 17°, che equivalgono ad un diametro reale di 4600 AL. Il complesso sarebbe ancora in una fase iniziale della sua evoluzione.
Diversi oggetti di questa regione richiamano l'attenzione. IC 1318 (Sh2-108) è un complesso di nebulose posto prospetticamente vicino alla stella Sadr (che in realtà è a “soli” 1500 AL dal sistema solare). Si ritiene si sia formato dall'esplosione di una o più supernovae. IC 1318 è solcato da una intensa linea oscura, la nebulosa oscura LND 889, che separa le due sezioni più orientali di questa nebulosa. Altro oggetto notevole è NGC 6888 o Nebulosa Crescente. Si tratta di una “bolla di vento stellare” generata da una massiccia stella di Wolf-Rayet (HD 192163), che si trova al suo interno. Questa stella sarebbe anche la responsabile della nebulosa, che costituirebbe il materiale degli strati più esterni della stella espulsi. Infine, a sud-ovest del complesso è posta Sh2-101 o Nebulosa Tulipano, una grande regione HII a circa 8750 anni luce di distanza dal sistema solare, che ospiterebbe alcuni fenomeni attivi di formazione stellare. Nella parte più remota di Sh2-109, prospetticamente in prossimità di Sh2-101, si trova il Cygnus X-1, una sorgente di raggi X ritenuta un buco nero che risucchia la materia della sua stella compagna, una supergigante blu.
