La specie di oropendola più comune e diffusa, dal Costa Rica a sud in gran parte del Sud America a est delle Ande, dal piumaggio in gran parte nero con groppa e ventre castani, lunga coda gialla, becco giallo pallido e iride blu. Le oropendole crestate vivono ai margini e nelle radure delle foreste tropicali e subtropicali ma anche in savane e piantagioni con grandi alberi. Come tutte le altre specie di oropendole nidificano in colonie, costruendo su un albero lunghi nidi intrecciati dalla caratteristica forma a pera allungata, ciascuno appeso all'estremità di un ramo. Questi uccelli gregari si nutrono di grandi insetti e di frutta. Sono molto vocali e sono dotati di una vasta gamma di canti e richiami.
