Melitaea diamina, (Lang, 1789) - Famiglia Nymphalidae - Sottofamiglia Nymphalinae - Apertura alare: Da 3,3 a 3,9 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente su tutto l'arco alpino e prealpino con qualche stazione in pianura e colonie isolate sugli Appennini dall'Umbria alla Basilicata. - Habitat: Pendii erbosi umidi dalla pianura a 2600 m. - Periodo di volo: Univoltina quasi ovunque da fine maggio ad agosto in base alla quota, ma in alcune località di pianura produce una seconda generazione che vola da metà agosto ai primi di settembre. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Varie specie di piantaggini in particolare del genere Valeriana e Melampyrum. - Dimorfismo sessuale: Femmina con velatura nera ridotta e con colore fulvo più chiaro che, verso il bordo dell'ala, può tendere al giallo biancastro. - Variazioni: Presenta due sottospecie ben differenziate: la nominale delle zone collinari e alpine con un forte melanismo sulle ali posteriori, in particolare nei maschi, la seconda (ssp.wheeleri) di pianura, purtroppo estinta in molte località, è più chiara e può essere facilmente confusa con le altre specie del genere Melitaea. (Non è del tutto a fuoco ma è la migliore che mi è riuscita)
