Artists performing Kathakali (India).
Kathakali is a major form of classical Indian dance. It is a "story play" genre of art, but one distinguished by the elaborately colourful make-up and costumes of the traditional male actor-dancers. It is native to the region of Kerala.
The traditional themes of the Kathakali are folk stories, religious legends and spiritual ideas from the Hindu epics.

The south was my first trip to India, chosen specifically because it is more authentically unique, compared to the center and the north, influenced more by Islam and Persia. Hard journey in those years, up to Kerala with its backwaters, sung at that time also by David Sylvian. It was 1989, practically the day before yesterday. Fantastic this dance that tells passages of the Ramayana and Mahabharata; I remember very vividly the very particular gestures and in particular the movement of the pupils to emphasize the acting; special also the make-up phase, with the protagonists lying on the ground to have their faces painted. This photo is also beautiful, expertly taken on the edge of the scene; for perfection you would perhaps have needed a 14 instead of 16, to also understand the Shiva dancing on the jamb of the portal on stage.
