I quattro mosaici nelle lunette della facciata della basilica illustrano le importanti vicissitudini del corpo di San Marco tra Alessandria d'Egitto e Venezia. Partendo da destra, nella parte inferiore della facciata, troviamo il decoro musivo che raffigura come nell'828 il corpo fu trafugato dai veneziani Bono di Malamocco e Rustico da Torcello e trasportato a Venezia. Si nota la cesta in cui il corpo fu coperto con ortaggi, merci varie ed infine carne di maiale. Le reazioni dei doganieri egiziani sono piuttosto esplicite: uno si tappa il naso, l'altro con la mano esprime disgusto e ruota il viso dall'altra parte. Grazie a questo stratagemma, le reliquie lasciarono l'Egitto per il lungo viaggio fino a Venezia.
