La basilica di San Biagio sul monte omonimo è il principale luogo di culto Cristiano di Maratea essa anche denominata "la città delle 44 chiese". La basilica fu fondata su antichi resti di un tempio pagano epoca impero dedicato alla dea Minerva, ad essa aspira infatti anche il nome del monte, oggi San Biagio, un tempo monte Minerva; nonostante alcuni reperti suggeriscono tale transizione, tempio-chiesa, non si hanno assolute certezze di ciò, così come sulla data certa dell'edificazione della chiesa, poiché un fulmine nel 1629 provocando un incendio distrusse molto del passato della chiesa.
