La costa pugliese, da sempre oggetto di incursioni di pirati e corsari che riducevano in schiavitù molti abitanti, vide a partire dal XV secolo il proiettarsi minaccioso della potenza turca nell'Adriatico. Nel XVI secolo gli spagnoli progettarono un piano di interventi in grado di controllare, senza soluzione di continuità, tutte le coste del Regno e allertare anche l'entroterra, in caso di attacco. In Terra di Bari tra l'Ofanto e Monopoli, su uno sviluppo costiero di 150 km, intervallate da città munite di castelli e porti fortificati, furono edificate tra il 1569 e il 1573 sedici torri. Nella costa molfettese si erge, ancora oggi a testimonianza di tale sistema difensivo, Torre Calderina in prossimità di Cala San Giacomo, antico approdo cittadino, attivo già nel Medioevo. Presenta la tipologia tipica delle torri di vedetta vicereali a pianta quadrangolare con struttura tronco-piramidale. Ha tre caditoie per muro e nessuna apertura dal lato mare. Oggi la scala esterna in pietra sostituisce l'antica scala amovibile che permetteva l'accesso al vano abitabile della torre. Attualmente è in fase di risanamento e dovrebbe essere sede di un piccolo osservatorio astronomico oltre che attrattiva turistica
