Particolare sottospecie della famiglia di serpenti Viperidae, é l'unica sottospecie endemica della Sicilia è dell'Italia meridionale. Si dice che anticamente, sarebbe stata introdotta dai Greci sull'isola di Montecristo. Questo raro rettile si presenta con una dimensione abbastanza piccola, non supera mai il metro di lunghezza. Il suo aspetto é tozzo in particolare al centro. La testa e di forma piatta e triangolare, da come vedete in foto, a leggermente il muso rivolto all'insù, con una pupilla trasversale, la coda é distinta dal resto del corpo.
