Poco dopo il Ponte San Michele – che collega Paderno d'Adda e Calusco d'Adda – il fiume Adda, che prima scorre lento in un fondovalle alluvionale, entra in una profonda gola, scavata nella roccia sedimentaria di origine glaciale caratteristica del medio corso del fiume, detta “ceppo dell'Adda”. Qui il suo corso diventa impetuoso e spumeggiante, con rapide e massi affioranti, caratteristiche che rendono la navigazione impossibile. Questa conformazione ha segnato, già nel XVI secolo d.C., la necessità di una via alternativa attraverso la quale trasportare le merci dal Lago di Como a Milano, soddisfatta solo nel 1777 grazie alla realizzazione del Naviglio di Paderno. La progettazione e la realizzazione di questo canale artificiale, dotato di un sistema di chiuse idrauliche dette “conche”, fu lungo e travagliato e passò anche da studi e progetti di Leonardo da Vinci. Ma il Naviglio di Paderno non è l'unico elemento di questo tratto di fiume Adda che riconduce a Leonardo: tra gli speroni di roccia spicca il rilievo dei Tre Corni, una caratteristica formazione costituita da tre grandi massi di “ceppo dell'Adda” che si ergono maestosi dal fiume e si innalzano con la punta smussata verso il cielo. Oltre a essere presenti in numerosi schizzi e disegni che Leonardo da Vinci realizzò durante il suo soggiorno a Vaprio d'Adda, sono molto probabilmente stati di ispirazione per lo sfondo del celebre dipinto della Vergine delle Rocce del genio toscano, conservato in due versioni al Louvre di Parigi e alla National Gallery di Londra.
