Verso i 17 anni, dopo il rito di passaggio, le ragazze passano al gruppo successivo; ora sono pronte per il matrimonio ma, siccome difficilmente un giovane guerriero possiede la ricchezza necessaria per mantenere una famiglia, le ragazze lasciano i propri amanti e sposano un appartenente del gruppo degli anziani, solitamente solo loro hanno una ricchezza in bestiame sufficiente per poter sposare e mantenere qualcuno. Il rito di passaggio delle donne Masai consiste nella pratica barbara della mutilazione genitale, in pratica viene effettuata una clitoridectomia e, in alcuni clan, anche l'asportazione delle grandi labbra della vagina. Fortunatamente questa pratica, emuatare o infibulazione, è una pratica che oggi viene vietata dalla legge e rifiutata dalle ragazze che non vogliono essere mutilate e quindi desiderano avere un rito di passaggio incruento e non invasivo; questo però purtroppo non significa che questa pratica sia stata completamente abbandonata né dai Masai né da altri gruppi etnici del continente.
