Nel cuore della costellazione dei Canes Venatici si trova una splendida galassia a spirale nota come M51 Whirlpool Galaxy. Essa è una grande galassia a spirale che ha un diametro di circa 100.000 anni luce e si stima che contenga tra i 100 e le 400 miliardi di stelle. È una delle galassie più luminose e massicce dell'universo vicino.
