Usciti dal centro storico di Cortona si trovano le antiche vestigia etrusche, le mura con le gigantesche pietre che erano caratteristiche per la difesa delle città dell'Etruria. Le tombe (necropoli) generalmente erano poste in aree, al di fuori delle cinte murarie cittadine. La Tanella di Pitagora é una costruzione a forma cilindrica del diametro di poco più di sette metri che ricorda in piccolo la costruzione della "Mole Adriana" in Roma. Conosciuta già nel cinquecento fu visitata dal Vasari che sembra la giudicasse la tomba di Archimede. Da allora i visitatori si sono sbizzarriti nel riconoscere nella costruzione chi la tomba di Ulisse, altri quella di Pitagora, richiamati in tali attribuzioni dallo stile greco-ellenistico della sua architettura. Il monumento subì progressivi deterioramenti dal cinquecento all'ottocento, quando truppe francesi di passaggio le arrecarono notevoli danni. La critica più recente colloca la sua datazione al II secolo a. C. Fu donata all'Accademia Etrusca nel 1929 dalla signora Maria Laparelli Pitti. Da Wikimapia
