Il tempio buddista piu alto del complesso Kiyomizu-dera, a Kyoto, sovrasta fieramente la città sottostante. La costruzione risale al 798, ma l'edificio attuale è il risultato di una restaurazione datata 1633. Il tempio principale sorge sulle pendici ripide di un monte e si estende in una ampia terrazza che diparte dalla valle sottostante. La cosa affascinante di questo complesso di templi è che sono stati costruiti interamente in legno (e senza l'uso di chiodi).
