Questa è la seconda foto che documenta l'ultima muta del macaone, in questa scena potete osservare che ormai la crisalide ha rotto la cuticola e grazie alle forti contrazioni la sta facendo scivolare lungo il corpo. È interessante osservare che la crisalide è già pronta a contenere la farfalla: c'è già lo spazio per gli occhi e quello per le antenne, piegato in avanti. Come molte altre specie di lepidotteri, la vita del macaone in natura è molto difficile a causa dei tanti predatori e per questo ritengo importante l'allevamento. Gli uccelli insettivori catturano molto facilmente i bruchi per mangiarli o per nutrire i piccoli nel nido. Ma gli animali che causano più danni ai bruchi sono alcune specie di imenotteri, in particolare la famiglia Ichneumonidae. La femmina, grazie al suo ovopositore, depone alcune uova nel bruco quando è ancora giovane, da queste uova nascono delle piccolissime larve, che iniziano a divorarlo lentamente, lasciando gli organi vitali per ultimi in modo da non farlo morire subito. Quando le larve dell'imenottero sono cresciute escono dal bruco e possono attaccare anche altri bruchi vicini. A volte le larve fanno in modo che il bruco abbia energia a sufficienza per riuscire a compiere l'ultima muta e a preparare anche la crisalide. Un altro predatore è la Tettigonia viridissima, un ortottero carnivoro che si nutre di insetti e preferisce anche bruchi e piccole farfalle. La scorsa estate mentre ero in esplorazione ho visto questa specie mangiare un grosso bruco di macaone in un minuto. Allevare i piccoli animali richiede molta esperienza e spazio, servono molti contenitori adatti, alcuni li ho costruiti io ma utilizzo anche i fauna box. Ogni anno allevo dai 40 ai 60 macaoni, senza considerare tutte le altre specie di lepidotteri e altri animali. Per trovare i lepidotteri, dalla primavera fino all'autunno ogni giorno controllo tutte le piante nutrici nel mio terreno in cerca di bruchi e uova. Cerco sempre di raccogliere le uova delle varie specie così sono sicuro che i piccoli bruchi nasceranno sani. Trovare le uova sulle piante nutrici è difficile, sono piccolissime e devo osservare ogni foglia molto attentamente; ogni specie poi preferisce un posto preciso sulla pianta per deporre le uova. Le posiziono in piccoli contenitori che ho costruito e attendo la schiusa, questo perché i fauna box hanno i fori per l'aria troppo grandi e i bruchi appena nati possono scappare. Quando iniziano a crescere li sposto in contenitori più grandi, ognuno di essi contiene 4 o 5 bruchi e ogni giorno gli do il cibo fresco. Quando trovo un giovane bruco lo posiziono da solo in un contenitore perché voglio essere sicuro che sia sano. Anche nel mio allevamento purtroppo qualche bruco muore per cause naturali, ma con le giuste cure questo succede molto raramente e tutti compiono correttamente la metamorfosi. Per fotografare questa fase sono stato in attesa tutto il pomeriggio ad osservare il bruco e finalmente alle 19,30 ha iniziato la muta. Il sole era già tramontato e stava arrivando il buio, c'era un costante vento che muoveva a destra e a sinistra la crisalide e ha reso più difficile fotografare. Poi dopo essermi fermato ad osservare un altro po' la crisalide, l'ho posizionata nel contenitore e ho iniziato la mia solita esplorazione notturna.
