L'architettura venne realizzata alla metà dell'Ottocento su commissione dell'Accademia degli Arditi, progettato da Carlo Gatteschi nel 1854 i lavori s'inserirono nel più ampio progetto di riqualificazione di Piazza Signorelli. Il loggiato esterno infatti coincide con le originarie Logge del Grano. Al Teatro Signorelli si tiene una ricca stagione teatrale e ospita altri eventi che arricchiscono la vita culturale della città.

Esternamente il Teatro Signorelli mostra un lungo loggiato con sette arcate, disposto parallelamente rispetto all'architettura. Al suo posto sorgevano le antiche Logge del Grano preesistenti in piazza. Sedici pilastri, disposti su due file simmetriche, sorreggono le volte a lunetta del loggiato.

L'atrio del Teatro Signorelli di Cortona precede la sala a ferro di cavallo dove si svolgono gli spettacoli.

Quest'ultima conta quattro ordini di palchi, mentre la platea è sormontata da una volta con affreschi floreali.

I lavori per la costruzione del Teatro Signorelli iniziarono nel 1854. Nel luogo dove sorge il teatro prima c'era la Chiesa di Sant'Andrea. Lo stile adottato dal progettista, Carlo Gatteschi, ricalca in pieno la tendenza neoclassica di quel periodo. Quando il teatro venne completato nel 1857, fu chiamato Teatro Imperiale o Regio Teatro Leopoldo in onore del granduca di Toscana.

Gran parte della vita culturale di Cortona si svolge nel Teatro Signorelli, intensa e di qualità è sempre stata la sua consona attività; da molti anni è anche adoperato come cinema, caffè e sala convegni oltre per mostre d'arte. Nel prossimo appuntamento vi mostrerò una mostra di pittura d'arte Futurista.
