The unconventional flower sent on February 12, 2023 (20:06) by Luigi Torino. 15 comments, 332 views. [retina]

, 1/250 f/5.0, ISO 400, hand held. Reggio Calabria, Italy. Specie: Limodorum abortivum

Thank you :-) in Calabria there is a very similar endemic species, Limodorum brulloi, I do not know if I have decent photos that I will post later (in case I recover in June :-D )

Interesting the caption you wrote and Wonderful image for this wild orchid that I also find in my area right near home. I didn't know it had such a vast range from South to North, STRONG. Bravissimo Luigi, CIAO.

Thank you, it is easy to find this genre almost everywhere. The species that resort to self-pollination/cleistogamy are the most widespread throughout Europe because they have an ancient origin (more primitive reproductive strategies), and are also little variable throughout their range (think for example of the typical form of Ophrys apifera, the genera Limodorum and Neottia) ;-)

Always a pleasure to observe this species. Great photo. There are years (like the past one) when flowers are often always open. I happened to meet the limodorum trabutianum, a similar species rarer, but aimé with closed flowers.

The trabutianum here is present with the subspecies / vicariant Limodorum brulloi, I happened to find it with open flowers but they are not as beautiful :-D
