Una macro scattata ad agosto dello scorso anno durante una notte molto umida, nei giorni precedenti c'erano stati forti temporali. L'Agrius convolvuli è un lepidottero appartenente alla famiglia Sphingidae, compie due generazioni all'anno, la prima vola tra maggio e giugno, la seconda tra luglio e settembre. La femmina depone fino a 200 uova una ad una sulle piante della famiglia Convolvulaceae mentre è in volo, essendo ricoperte da una sostanza appiccicosa rimangono attaccate sulle foglie, inizialmente sono di colore verde scuro ma poco dopo diventano gialle. I piccoli bruchi nascono dopo circa 10 giorni e sono di colore verde, come tutti i lepidotteri, i tempi della crescita dipendono dalle temperature, 2 settimane nei mesi estivi e più di un mese in autunno. Dopo la seconda muta, la colorazione può restare verde oppure cambiare in marrone o nero. In natura è stato osservato un diverso comportamento dei bruchi a seconda della colorazione: i bruchi verdi si nutrono sia di giorno che di notte, mentre quelli scuri solo di notte, restando nascosti durante il giorno. Questo perché la colorazione verde rende i bruchi più mimetici con le piante e hanno maggiori possibilità di sopravvivenza durante il giorno. Come altre specie della famiglia Sphingidae, ha nella parte posteriore del corpo un corno che serve a dare l'aspetto di una seconda testa con lo scopo di spaventare o disorientare i predatori. Il bruco, diventato adulto, abbandona la pianta nutrice e cammina nel terreno in cerca di un luogo adatto dove nascondersi, percorrendo anche diverse centinaia di metri. Scava un rifugio nel terreno a circa 15cm di profondità creandosi una celletta in cui, dopo 2 giorni, si trasforma in crisalide. La crisalide è lunga pochi cm ed è di colore marrone chiaro con una particolare caratteristica che la distingue: la spiritromba, leggermente piegata, esce fuori dalla crisalide ed è rivestita da un particolare involucro. La generazione estiva compie la metamorfosi in circa due settimane mentre quella destinata all'anno successivo, trascorrerà l'inverno sotto terra e nascerà in primavera. Purtroppo sopporta con difficoltà il freddo, quindi nei mesi invernali se le temperature sono molto basse non riesce a sopravvivere. La farfalla ha abitudini notturne quindi può essere chiamata falena, è molto grande e robusta, di colore grigio e marrone ma lungo l'addome ha delle strisce colorate rosa, bianche e nere, gli occhi sono molto grandi per consentirgli un'ottima visione notturna. Le ali sono molto robuste e le consentono di volare con molta agilità, ogni anno migra verso nord nel tentativo di colonizzare stagionalmente nuove zone. Ha un'apertura alare che può raggiungere i 12 cm, quando è ferma a riposo chiude le ali lungo il corpo consentendo la mimetizzazione facendola sembrare un pezzo del tronco. Come per diversi lepidotteri, la femmina è più grande del maschio, ha le antenne più piccole e l'addome più arrotondato. Quando vola emette un particolare rumore causato dal movimento delle ali, durante le esplorazioni lo sento spesso soprattutto ad agosto e settembre. Cammino sempre lentamente e in silenzio per evitare di spaventare gli animali o calpestarli, inoltre in questo modo ogni piccolissimo rumore anche a distanza arriva subito all'orecchio. Quella notte ho sentito di nuovo il volo di questa falena, era a qualche centinaio di metri da me e lentamente mi sono avvicinato per osservarla. Era ferma in volo vicino ai fiori di Mirabilis jalapa, mentre si nutriva di nettare con la sua lunga spirotromba che può raggiungere i 10 cm, poi all'improvviso passava da un fiore all'altro. Era velocissima, ho assistito a questa scena in diverse occasioni ma anche quella volta sono rimasto meravigliato ad osservarla. Dopo un po' si è posata tra i fiori, non potevo fotografarla lì perché era troppo nascosta, in più c'erano altre falene che giravano intorno. Ho trovato un luogo adatto in una zona incolta vicino al prato e ho preparato tutta l'attrezzatura necessaria, treppiede pesante per la macchina fotografica e tre più piccoli per il plamp e due flash, posizionati ai due lati. Ho aspettato qualche minuto e poi mi sono avvicinato con un ramo secco di quercia per cercare di farla salire, appena gliel'ho messo davanti si è subito aggrappata e ho potuto posizionarla sul treppiede. Poco dopo ha iniziato ad agitare le ali e sono riuscito a fotografarla con l'addome colorato visibile, la scena è durata pochi secondi, poi è volata via verso i fiori e non ho voluto più disturbarla. Le ali di questa specie sono appuntite ma questo esemplare era un po' vissuto ed erano consumate all'estremità, in questa foto potete osservare la particolarità dell'addome e i suoi colori che si mimetizzano molto bene con il tronco.
