Il Monte Arcuentu con i suoi 784 metri di altitudine rappresenta la vetta più alta di un massiccio vulcanico che sorge parallelo alla Costa Verde. Un insieme di cime aspre e selvagge costituite da muraglie giganti di pietra, dovute alla solidificazione di antiche colate laviche, circondate da boschi di lecci. Numerose le varietà di animali che ci vivono: oltre al cervo sardo è possibile incontrare cinghiali, lepri, falchi pellegrini, aquila reale, corvi e pernici. Le rocce del Monte Arcuentu quindi sono prevalentemente di natura basaltica ma sul versante occidentale sono presenti anche tufi pomicei fossiliferi che discendono verso la costa. Sulla cima, da cui si gode un panorama mozzafiato sulle aree minerarie e sul lunghissimo tratto di costa, è possibile scorgere i ruderi di un castello medievale che dimostrano come il territorio sia stato oggetto di frequentazioni in passato. Il primo documento che lo menziona risale infatti al 1164. Il Castello fu anche un monastero Vallombrosano e a tal proposito curiosa è la storia di Fra Lorenzo (frate francescano del Convento Fra Ignazio da Laconi di Cagliari) che per trent'anni consecutivi nel corso del XX secolo, ha vissuto un mese all'anno sul Monte per le sue meditazioni, circondato da una meravigliosa vegetazione, da un assoluto silenzio, dalla storia e dalle leggende che popolano questo luogo magico. Grazie a Fra Lorenzo tutt'oggi è presente la spettacolare via Crucis che dalla base del monte conduce fino alla sua cima. Il castello/monastero è stato usato inoltre sin dal medioevo come postazione militare, ottimo punto di avvistamento sia verso la costa che verso l'interno.
