BASILICA DI SANTA MARIA IN ARA COELI La Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli al Campidoglio è situata nel centro storico di Roma, nel rione Campitelli: questa è la chiesa regionale del SENATUS POPULUSQUE ROMANUS (Comune di Roma). La chiesa fu costruita probabilmente sui resti del Tempio di Giunone Moneta (ossia, "ammonitrice") e dell'Auguraculum, (ovvero, l'area sacra nella quale gli Auguri prendevano gli auspici osservando il volo degli uccelli), che secondo le fonti antiche sorgevano sull'Arx, la sommità settentrionale del colle capitolino. La chiesa è sede del titolo cardinalizio di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli, istituito da Leone X il 10 luglio 1517: l'attuale titolare è il cardinale Salvatore De Giorgi. Si accede alla basilica dalla ripida scalinata (restaurata l'ultima volta nel 1964), scandita da 125 gradini raggruppati in serie di otto, realizzata nel 1348 da Lorenzo di Simone Andreotti, a spese del popolo romano, come ringraziamento a Maria Vergine per aver salvato la città dalla peste. La facciata, a guscio in laterizi di spoglio, di diverso formato e colore, databile al XIII secolo, è coronata da un timpano orizzontale segnato da due gole, stretto tra i due spioventi laterali ornati da una cornice marmorea a denti di sega; questa presentava una decorazione musiva di cui rimangono ancora visibili nella gola di destra, alcuni frammenti. Nel 1689 la basilica venne completamente restaurata, arricchita di decori barocchi e modificata all'interno con la chiusura quasi completa delle finestre, di forme gotiche, che davano luce all'interno. Durante l'occupazione di Roma da parte dei francesi, nel 1797, questi si impossessarono dell'intero colle, espulsero i frati francescani e adibirono la chiesa a stalla: in quest'occasione andarono distrutte gran parte delle decorazioni cosmatesche che la impreziosivano. Dopo l'unità d'Italia, nel 1873 la chiesa fu espropriata e incamerata dal demanio del Regno d'Italia,[3], che vi insediò la caserma e il comando dei Vigili Urbani, successivamente passò in quello della Repubblica italiana, che ancora oggi la gestisce attraverso il Fondo Edifici di Culto (FEC).
