Originaria della fascia costiera del Capo Occidentale , in Sudafrica, cresce attivamente durante la stagione delle piogge invernali. L'odore putrido dei fiori di molte specie di Orbea attira le mosche ed altri insetti favorendo così l'impollinazione. Le mosche vengono ingannati dall'odore di carne marcia tanto da deporre le loro uova intorno alla corona carnosa, convinte che sarà una fonte di cibo per le loro larve. Un fiore tanto bello quanto puzzolente :-)
