Quella locale, la Betulla aetnensis, è una pianta endemica della Sicilia presente in forma spontanea solo nel territorio etneo, a quote intorno ai 1500. La sua presenza è da ricondurre agli effetti che l'ultima glaciazione, avvenuta tra 70.000 e 10.000 anni fa, ha prodotto sugli habitat siciliani.
