Lycaena virgaureae (Linné, 1758) - Famiglia Lycaenidae - Sottofamiglia Lycaeninae - Apertura alare: Da 2,9 a 3,2 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente su Alpi e Appennini. - Habitat: Praterie fiorite, ambienti umidi e bordi di corsi d'acqua, dalla pianura fino a oltre 2500 m. - Periodo di volo: Univoltina da luglio ad agosto. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Varie piante del genere Rumex tra cui prevalentemente Rumex acetosa. - Dimorfismo sessuale: Femmina con disegno del rovescio simile al maschio, ma vistosamente diversa sul diritto. - Variazioni_ Le variazioni riguardano in particolare le femmine che possono essere più o meno velate di nero sul diritto delle ali, in base alla popolazione locale di appartenenza. Troviamo sugli Appennini femmine molto chiare e sulle Alpi quelle più scure che in alcuni individui possono presentare, sempre sul diritto delle ali, una serie di macchiette bianche in corrispondenza di quelle del rovescio.
