Il complesso del Convento do Carmo comprende un monastero romanico e la chiesa omonima, risalenti al 1398 e profondamente danneggiati dal terremoto del 1755. La Chiesa è stata volutamente non ristrutturata e rimane uno dei simboli più tangibili di quella grande catastrofe. Il suo aspetto un po' inquietante si equilibra bene con i resti del convento, quasi scenici, con le arcate aperte verso il cielo e l'azzurro del cielo a fare da contrasto alla pietra chiara e ricoperta dall'erba. Infatti, il tetto in pietra crollò nel 1755 e non è mai stato ricostruito. Il Convento si trova nel quartiere del Chado (quartiere preferito dal poeta Pessoa che trascorreva gran parte delle sue giornate a leggere e scrivere nel vicino caffè “A Brasileira” ) e domina piazza Rossio e si affaccia sulla collina del Castelo de Sao Jorge. Dopo il terremoto, il complesso non fu mai recuperato del tutto e ha cambiato varie funzioni nel corso dei secoli. Nel 1864 la struttura passò nelle mani dell'associazione degli archeologi portoghesi che trasformarono l'edificio in rovina in un museo, l'attuale Museo Archeologico do Carmo, che racchiude pezzi provenienti da luoghi e stili diversi, di vari periodi storici.
