È arrivato l'autunno con il costante vento e le piogge, gli animali iniziano ad andare in letargo, le mie esplorazioni notturne per quest'anno sono finite e ne sento già la mancanza. Vi mostro quindi uno scatto fatto a luglio ad un adulto di Metcalfa pruinosa, un insetto molto particolare. Questa specie ha una sola generazione all'anno, si accoppia in autunno e la femmina depone nella corteccia di varie piante come olivo, melo, pero, fico, vite, nocciolo e kiwi, da 50 a 100 uova che si schiuderanno in primavera. Trascorre tutta la sua vita sulla vegetazione delle piante infestate riempiendole di una sostanza cotonosa di cui si ricopre per proteggersi. È un insetto dannoso per due motivi: ha un apparato boccale pungente e si nutre della ninfa vegetale delle piante di cui digerisce solo la parte proteica ed espelle la parte zuccherina sotto forma di melata, che attira molto le api, da cui deriva appunto il miele di melata. La melata però può causare anche lo sviluppo di fumaggini che rallentano la fotosintesi clorofilliana della pianta e possono portarla anche alla morte. È molto difficile da fotografare, gli adulti sono lunghi fino a 7 millimetri e se infastiditi possono fare dei grandi salti e scomparire tra i rami.
