Il termine gallarjia si presume essere di origine italiana e derivante dalla parola galleria che significa passaggio coperto. Questi balconi comperti sono considerati discendenti e derivanti da un elemento dell'architettura tipica del mondo islamico: la mashrabiya. Una sorta di bovindo sporgente costruito in legno intagliato e a volte impreziosito da vetrate situato ai piani superiori degli edifici.Questo elemento tipico dell'architettura vernacolare maltese si diffuse in particolare a La Valletta e nelle Tre Città nel XVIII secolo, parallelamente alla diffusione dello stile barocco.
