Le fonti storiche non ci consentono di sapere con precisione quando tale chiesa fu edificata. Si sa con sicurezza invece che essa fu progettata e realizzata come cattedrale, come risulta anche da alcuni particolari della struttura (la forma in pianta basilicale latina, con tre navate). Per quanto riguarda l'epoca della sua costruzione i pochi elementi a disposizione fanno presumere che l'edificio risale all'XI secolo. Gli studiosi hanno riconosciuto il grande valore di tale chiesa, che presenta elementi non rinvenibili in nessun altro edificio adibito al culto presente in Lucania; di grande rilievo architettonico è ad esempio la fusione, presente nella chiesa di S. Lucia, della pianta a croce greca con la basilicale a tre.
