Si estende per circa 5 chilometri quadrati ed è un deserto in miniatura, anche se è quello naturale più grande di tutta Europa. Un paesaggio di incredibile bellezza che prende vita in una delle zone più suggestive di tutta la Sardegna: un territorio spoglio, in alcuni punti quasi montano, e dove un tempo erano attive le miniere più importanti del nostro Paese. Le alture sabbiose sono facilmente raggiungibili dalla vicina Arbus, e sono definite “vive” a causa della costante opera dei venti che le modella continuamente. Ma ciò che colpisce particolarmente il visitatore è la vegetazione che, seppure in condizioni apparentemente ostili, riesce comunque a trovare il suo spazio: crescono, infatti, ginepri, lentischi, gigli marittimi e papaveri della sabbia. Questo “Piccolo Sahara italiano” degrada fino al mare, favolosamente limpido e dai colori accesi grazie anche ai riflessi giallo ocra e bianchi della sabbia, vantando pure dei fondali piuttosto profondi. Ma il flusso del vento rende la spiaggia una delle mete preferite dai surfisti che, soprattutto durante il periodo invernale, possono praticare questo sport grazie alle onde lunghe ed alte. Inoltre, da queste parti è interessante anche fare immersioni. Le dune di Piscinas sono, dunque, uno dei posti più selvaggi e autentici della Sardegna, un territorio ancora isolato e integro nella sua bellezza. Una zona in cui il soffiare del vento modella continuamente il paesaggio regalando al visitatore scenari di rara bellezza. Del resto, non capita tutti i giorni di trovare deserti di sabbia lambiti da un mare eccezionale e circondati da florida e verdissima vegetazione.
