Correva l'anno 1979 e nel Campionato Mondiale di Formula 1 erano 15 le gare da disputare: domenica 16 settembre si gareggiò pure sul Circuito Enzo e Dino Ferrari ad Imola (Bo) ma tale gara non faceva parte del Calendario del Mondiale. La Scuderia Ferrari vi partecipò con le vetture modello 312 T3... nelle prime competizioni... per poi sostituirle con le 312 T4 e T4B: tutte progettate dall'ingegnere Mauro Forghieri. Portavano i numeri 11… quella condotta dal sudafricano Jody Scheckter (classe 1950) e 12... quella guidata dal canadese Gilles Villeneuve (1950-1982). Il risultato sperato era vincere il Campionato o… differentemente… arrivare in fondo con più punti rispetto a Mario Andretti (nato in Istria e poi naturalizzato Statunitense, classe 1940) che a bordo delle Lotus modello 78 e 79 motorizzate Ford Cosworth DFV 8V aveva vinto il Campionato nel precedente anno 1978. Il punteggio veniva assegnato ai primi 6 arrivati al traguardo in ogni gara mentre a fine stagione in caso di parità per chi era in testa alla classifica venivano tenuti in considerazione i 4 migliori risultati nelle prime 7 gare e poi eventualmente i 4 migliori piazzamenti nelle rimanenti 8. Domenica 1° luglio si corse il Grand Prix de France sul circuito di Diglione a Prenois… dove all'epoca si gareggiava un anno sì ed uno no in quanto tale circuito veniva alternato a quello del Paul Ricard sito a Le Castellet… che poi nel tempo a seguire diverrà l'unico utilizzato sul suolo francese. Jody Scheckter… che vincerà il Campionato a fine stagione… al momento era in testa alla Classifica Piloti. Nelle qualifiche… a sorpresa… la Equipe Renault Elf aveva conquistato la prima fila con le sue RS 10 Turbo condotte dai francesi Jean Pierre Jabouille… classe 1942… (n. 15) classificatosi primo nelle qualifiche del giorno precedente e Renè Arnoux… classe 1948… (n. 16) secondo… mentre Gilles con la sua Ferrari 312 T 4 partiva dalla 2° fila dopo aver conquistato il terzo tempo in prova. Alla partenza la Ferrari del canadese prese il largo con le Renault rimaste come inseguitrici ma… poco oltre la metà della competizione… Villeneuve accusò problemi ai freni così Jabouille conquistò il primo posto… per poi vincere la gara… mentre Gilles rimarrà a contendersi la seconda posizione con Renè… che era risalito dopo essere stato persino in nona posizione. Fra i due si accese una contesa di epico sapore fatta di sorpassi, frenate al limite e pure contatti che negli anni a venire verrà menzionata e ricordata... nella storia dell'agonismo automobilistico... come “Duel de Dijon": Il Duello... o anche La Battaglia... di Digione.
