In località Scurati, piccola frazione di Custonaci (in provincia di Trapani), si trova un piccolo borgo siciliano davvero particolare. Stiamo parlando della Grotta Mangiapane, una tra le più grandi della Sicilia, che prende il nome dalla famiglia che vi abitò a partire dal 1819. La grotta fa parte di un preistorico sistema di insediamenti che conta un totale di nove grotte, alcune comprese all'interno della Riserva Naturale del Monte Cofano. Alta circa 70 metri e profonda 50 metri, la Grotta Mangiapane è un antico insediamento preistorico abitato dall'uomo sin dal Paleolitico Superiore, come hanno dimostrato i numerosi reperti rinvenuti al suo interno. Grazie ad un'attività di scavi archeologici iniziata nel 1870 dal marchese Guido dalla Rosa, sono stati riportati alla luce denti e ossa di animali, selci e pitture rupestri. Oggi, è possibile osservare alcuni di questi reperti al museo Pepoli di Trapani, mentre tutti gli altri sono suddivisi tra il Museo “A. Salinas” di Palermo e il Museo Etno-Antropologico di Parigi. Soprannominata anche Grotta degli Uffizi, al suo interno ospita un piccolo borgo composto da poche case mimetizzate con i colori della terra, abitate dal 1819 fino agli anni '50 e appartenenti alla famiglia Mangiapane. Qui si trovava tutto ciò che serviva per condurre una vita essenziale, fatta di sussistenza e amore per la terra, lontano dalla civiltà e dal caos della città. Oltre alle abitazioni si trovavano stalle per animali, una piccola cappella, botteghe e persino un forno a legna. Il tutto circondato da un panorama meraviglioso, che spazia dal Monte Cofano all'azzurro del mare del Golfo di Erice. All'inizio il piccolo borgo era abitato da quattro nuclei famigliari, che vi dimorarono per 150 anni, vivendo di pastorizia e agricoltura. Dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale quasi tutti gli abitanti del villaggio emigrarono, abbandonandolo. Rimase solamente la famiglia di Rosario, la quale trasformò il villaggio in una stalla.
