Rustica e resistente, la sua fioritura resiste da marzo a maggio, periodo in cui abbellisce ampi spazi e panorami della Sardegna. Considerata infestante dei pascoli, non è molto gradita dagli animali. Le sue radici tuberizzate, fusiformi o irregolari ricche in sostanza amilacee e pectiche, in periodi di carestia, furono utilizzate come alimento. Il fusto cilindrico è eretto e robusto, di colore verde e privo di foglie. Le foglie sono tutte basali , lunghe e strette e con sezione triangolare appiattita. Infiorescenza ramificata, piramidale, poggiante su un robusto scapo, con brattee da membranose a verde-pallido, e fiori numerosi bianchi pedicellati, con peduncolo di 5-7mm, 6 tepali bianchi con nervatura centrale bruno-rossiccia. I frutti sono piccole capsule di forma sferica, prima verdi, poi rossastre, i cui semi saranno pronti per la riproduzione in settembre. Dalla pianta di asfodelo si ricava un ottimo miele; dal gambo si producono i nastri per l'intreccio dei cestini (tra i più famosi quelli di Flussio, Tinnura, Urzulei e Ollolai). In Sardegna il suo fiore viene spesso riportato come disegno nella tessitura, nella ceramica, nell'intarsio. Anticamente (Omero, Odissea) l'asfodelo era la pianta degli Inferi. Gli antichi Greci usavano piantarli sulle tombe, considerando i prati di asfodeli il soggiorno dei morti: infatti immaginavano il Regno dei Morti suddiviso in tre parti: il Tartaro per gli empi, i Campi Elisi per i buoni, ed infine i prati di asfodeli per chi era stato "né buono né cattivo". Anche in Sardegna resistono alcune tracce di tradizioni antiche che legano il culto dei morti alla pianta di Asfodelo.
