Metelkova è il quartiere degli artisti, degli attivisti e degli studenti. Un luogo alternativo e decisamente 'un'altra cosa rispetto al resto visto in città. La storia di Metelkova inizia nel 1993 come squat, ovvero come occupazione abusiva di spazi pubblici. Quell'anno il complesso delle ex caserme austroungariche – quartier generale dell'esercito jugoslavo-, che era a rischio demolizione, venne occupato su iniziativa della Rete per Metelkova. Si trattava di un'associazione di artisti e intellettuali che lo ha trasformato nell'area libera, autogestita e in costante trasformazione attiva ancora oggi. Metelkova, cuore pulsante della cultura underground, giovane e inclusiva, nel 2005 è stata iscritta nella lista del Patrimonio culturale immateriale della Slovenia.
