San Secondo è una chiesa romanica del XIII secolo e si trova sul Mongiglietto, ad ovest di Cortazzone (AT). La chiesa dipendeva in origine dal vescovo di Pavia, in seguito dal vescovo di Asti. Fino al XVII s. sorgeva al centro del paese, poi – forse per ragioni di sicurezza – l'abitato si trasferì nella posizione attuale, ad est della chiesa che rimase isolata. Come la gran parte delle chiese antiche è orientata con le absidi ad est e la facciata ad ovest, con un leggero disassamento dovuto alla morfologia del terreno. L'architettura, costruita in pietra arenaria, è armonica per forme e proporzioni e presenta una bellissima bicromia – cosa che condivide con altre chiese romaniche della zona (Montiglio, Montechiaro d'Asti e Cavagnolo) - data dall'inserimento di decorazioni in cotto. La parete Sud e le absidi sono arricchite da una fiorente e fantasiosa decorazione, fatta di archetti pensili, cornici a scacchiera, inserti di un motivo a denti di lupo, semicolonne e lesene, mensole capitelli e rilievi figurativi. La permette nord è invece decorata in modo più sobrio. L'interno, a tre navate voltate, completa la ricca decorazione con capitelli figurati. Sono state tentare diverse interpretazioni simboliche dell'impressionante repertorio di immagini della chiesa, talune interessanti ma prive di una solida base documentaria, almeno quelle relative ad immagini che non hanno confronti altrove, altre del tutto arbitrarie. Le tre absidi riprese al mattino in questa fotografia sono scalate, con quella centrale più alte e sporgente di quelle che concludono le navate laterali. Sono tutte e tre impostate su un altro zoccolo, coronate da archetti pensili e da una fascia a scacchiera, illuminate da finestre monofore strombate (cioè con i piedritti e l'archivolto inclinati per raccogliere la luce proveniente da ogni angolatura, variabile durante il giorno e durante l'anno): tre nell'abside maggiore, una in ciascuna abside laterale. L'abside maggiore è scandita in cinque campi da lesene e semicolonne; la sua finestra centrale presenta ancora una parte del diaframma lapideo originario dell'apertura che filtra e modula la luce indirizzata all'interno dell'abside nelle ore del mattino. È ben visibile sulle e i rilievi la decorazione sopra. #chiese #romanico #architetturaRomanica
