Nei primi anni '50… dello scorso secolo… l'importatore statunitense dell'Alfa Romeo chiese ai dirigenti di codesta se si poteva realizzare una vettura spider con alcune specifiche da lui descritte promettendo che se la vicenda avesse avuto buon esito si impegnava ad ordinarne da subito alcune migliaia di esemplari... e così prese vita il progetto della Giulietta Spider che verrà costruita dal 1955 al 1962 in 3 serie per un totale di circa 17.000 vetture. Disegnata da Pininfarina era dotata di un motore con 4 cilindri in linea di 1290 cm3 che inizialmente sviluppava 65 cavalli di potenza mentre dal 1958 tale potenza arriverà a sfiorare gli 80 cavalli permettendo così alla vettura di raggiungere i 165 chilometri orari di velocità massima. Nel 1962 alla vettura verranno apportate diverse modifiche e migliorie comprensive pure di un nuovo motore e cambierà il nominativo da Giulietta Spider a Giulia Spider.
