La basilica voluta dall'imperatore Giustiniano I, più grande e più maestosa rispetto a quelle situate nello stesso luogo. L'imperatore fece venire il materiale da tutto l'impero: colonne ellenistiche dal tempio di Artemide di Efeso, grandi pietre dalle cave di porfido egiziane, marmo verde dalla Tessaglia, pietra nera dalla regione del Bosforo e pietra gialla dalla Siria. Più di diecimila persone vennero impiegate nel cantiere. Questa nuova chiesa fu riconosciuta già all'epoca come la basilica più grande della cristianità. In effetti è di una maestosità che toglie il fiato, come la Basilica di San Pietro a Roma. Divenuta moschea dopo la conquista di Costantinopoli da parte degli Ottomani (1453), trasformata in museo con la repubblica Turca (1923), di nuovo moschea dal 2020 per volere del governo di Erdogan.
