Dall'antica fonte detta "Di sopra" del castello di Belforte si domina la Contea d'Elci, un territorio al centro per secoli delle dinamiche politiche anche europee. Dai Monti sullo sfondo proveniva il celebre argento di Montieri controllato prima dai conti d'Elci per conto dei vescovi di Volterra e dopo per la Repubblica di Siena. Fino al XV tutto l'argento italiano ed in parte anche europeo per il conio era montierino. I conti controllavano il territorio con i castelli, torri e piazzeforti e godettero di trattamenti fiscali particolari perfino dai Medici ai Lorena.
